Have you given much thought to the outdoor decor you have on your porch or patio?
One of my favorite rooms in our house isn’t actually inside the house at all – it’s our porch. Living in Florida, we love to spend as much time outdoors as we can. Though it does get pretty hot in the summer months, some well-placed fans and plenty of shade help solve that dilemma and enable us to still enjoy the fresh air. Since we spend so much time on our porch, I like to make it as stylish and inviting as any other room inside our home. That not only includes comfortable furniture, but it also extends to the outdoor decor I use to accessorize the space.
Decorating outdoor spaces has some minor differences from interior decorating, mostly due to the fact that you want items that can withstand the elements. But overall, the same design concepts apply. It is all about comfort, functionality, and style. Today, I’m concentrating on ideas for choosing outdoor decor.

Treat the space like you were decorating an indoor room. This outdoor space could be picked up and put right inside to serve as an elegant living room. Striped ottomans and matching pillows add a touch of class, while lamps and candles not only make the space look more like a room, but also offer cozy lighting.
Bring in an area rug. An area rug not only defines a conversation area on a patio, but also adds an extra layer of warmth and style that will help make it feel more comfortable.
Add statement lighting for al fresco dining. The right lighting can make all the difference in an indoor dining room. Choose lighting for your outdoor dining area with the same attention to detail.
Hang art on the walls. Express your personality by adorning your walls with artwork and accessories that speak to you. Choose pieces that are meant for outdoor spaces.
Establish a focal point. If your space doesn’t have a defined focal point around which to arrange your furniture, create one. To create a focal point on this patio, a fireplace surround was placed against a blank wall and the mantel decorated.
Hang a mirror. Who said mirrors were only for interiors? This one brings a lot of style to this outdoor space. The pillars are a nice touch, bringing in an additional architectural element.
Use garden stools for tables. Garden stools were originally used in gardens in China, but then made there way into interior spaces. Even though they are still commonly used inside, don’t forget their roots. Use them on your porch or patio as side tables or group a bunch together in place of a coffee table.
Add a buffet table for entertaining. When you have guests over, it’s nice to have a place to serve food whether you are indoors or out. A two-tiered table like this offers lots of storage area and could be used for almost anything in between gatherings.
Roll in a bar cart. Right now, bar carts are very popular for home interiors, but they are equally useful for outdoor spaces. Their small size makes them perfect for just about any patio or porch. (Note: If you choose a bar cart that isn’t meant to stay outdoors, be sure to bring it in when not in use.)
Choose a color palette that will inspire you. Usually for porches and patios, the color of the home will help guide the color scheme, but you can still have fun with it. Pops of color liven up this neutral sofa set against the home’s brick wall and create a fun seating area.
Create a lighting plan. Layer the lighting in your outdoor rooms, just as you would inside your home. The table lamp in the corner provides task lighting, while the overhead light offers general lighting. Another layer could be added by bringing in candles for mood lighting.
Dress up your table setting. Show your guests or your family that you love sitting down to dinner with them by creating a lovely tablescape. A setting like this will make any outdoor dinner feel more special.
Add “window treatments” in the form of curtains. They frame the view, offer privacy, and help with shade. You could go with a neutral fabric or add a punch of color by choosing curtains in a fun pattern. Then, carry those colors into the space with coordinating pillows and fresh flowers.
Another option for “window treatments” are natural fiber roller shades. The rustic look of these shades makes them ideal for outdoor rooms. They look great when paired with curtains, but are stylish enough to stand on their own.
Add a basket of pillows and throws. This will keep your guests comfortable, especially when nights get cooler in the fall and winter months.
