Following these closet organization tips to transform your closet:
The first step to organizing your closet is to eliminate everything you don’t wear, love or feel good wearing. Empty your closet out and go through everything. This is the most time-consuming part of the process but it’s also the most important. Try things on and be honest with yourself about what you want to wear and what no longer suits you. If you haven’t worn it in the last six months and you don’t get excited when you pull it out, there’s a good chance you’ll never decide to wear it. It’s just taking up space.
Add additional shelving and bars to accommodate your clothes, shoes, accessories, etc. Simple closet organization systems are available at home improvement stores or you could hire a professional to assist you.
Organize your closet so that everything is visible and accessible. If items are stored in a box, make them visible by putting a label on it. When you can easily see all of your stuff, you’re more likely to wear it and it’s easier to put outfits together more quickly.
Use fabric or plastic bins, baskets and decorative boxes to organize the smaller items in your closet, then label them. Be careful to avoid putting fragile fabrics in anything with rough edges.
Keep like items together such as tops, skirts, pants, etc. Organize your closet by hanging tops according to sleeve length and arrange everything according to color.
If space is available, store belts and scarves by hanging them on hooks mounted on the wall. Another option is to roll them up and store them in a labeled box. They also make hangers specifically for scarves, ties, and belts.
Invest in decent hangers. Use only wooden, velvet covered, plastic or padded hangers. Never use wire hangers; they’re not strong enough and can ruin the shape of clothes. Purchase specialty hangers for pants, skirts, suits, coats, etc.
Utilize the space on the inside of the door to help organize your closet. You can hang a plastic pocket shoe holder to hold shoes or accessories, install a robe hook or add a tie-rack.
Stuff a bunch of plastic shopping bags into another one and use it to fill out empty purses so they can maintain their shape when you’re not using them.
Keep shoes clean by storing them in clear plastic boxes or shoe boxes. If you use clear plastic boxes, they will all be the same size and easier to stack. Tape a picture of the shoes or put a label on the outside of the box.
