Moving into a new place is exciting, but it can also pose many challenges. One of the challenges begins after everything has been packed up and you’ve moved in. The challenge: how to make all your old furniture work in your new home.
When moving, most people usually take all their furniture from one place to another and deal with it. They don’t go out and buy new things every time they move. So what do you do if your old furniture isn’t playing nicely with the new place?
The good news is that you don’t have to toss everything out and bust your budget buying all new furniture. All it takes is a little creativity and imagination. Here are 8 tips that will help you make your old furniture work in your new home without having to start from scratch.
How Make Your Old Furniture Work in Your New Home
1 Decide what pieces you love and want to keep. If you really love it, you will find a way to make it work. Anything that you don’t want to keep can be donated or sold.
2 Re-imagine how you use your old furniture. If you’ve always used a piece of furniture the same way and in the same room, you may not be able to see it used in any other way or room. Break away from this thinking and start experimenting.
Look at each piece with fresh eyes and imagine how you could use it in another way in your new home. If possible, actually bring the piece into a different room to see how it feels before you decide where it should go. Could you repurpose that china cabinet by using it to hold books in the den? Would that small chest work better in your foyer? Can that twin bed be repurposed as a daybed in a sunroom?
3 Give your old furniture a makeover. A little paint or a new upholstery job may be just the thing a piece needs to work with the style of your new home. Even the simplest changes can help make furniture feel more like it belongs in a space. Painting everything in the same color is a great way to unify disparate pieces.
Switching out the hardware on a piece is a DIY project that can quickly change its personality. If you’re handy, you could consider making some creative alterations to a piece. Change the look of a cabinet by adding or removing doors. Change out the legs or pedestal on a table. Combine a small chest and a bookcase to create a hutch. The options are endless when you use your imagination.
4 Try a new furniture arrangement. We often have one specific idea on how furniture should be arranged in a room and we carry those plans to a new home. Don’t get caught up in that and feel like there are no other options.
Every room is different. The furniture arrangement you used in your last home may not work in your new home. Figure out what arrangement works best for the new space and then you can add or take away furniture to fit. Also, think about how you can swap pieces out from other rooms to make it work.
5 Mix your old pieces with fresh finds. When moving into a home that is a completely different style than your last one, you may find that the furniture from your previous home looks out of place in the new one. This doesn’t mean you have to get rid of everything to make your old furniture work in your new home.
Bring in new pieces that fit the style of your new home and mix them in with your existing furniture. You may find that the new pieces make you see the old ones in a completely different light and now they’re perfect for the space.
6 Change your accessories. One of the easiest and least expensive ways to change the look of a room is to change the accessories. It’s also a great way to bridge styles. Bring in rugs, pillows, lighting, and other decor that works with the style you want to express in your new home and blend it in with your current furniture to give it a new look.
7 Don’t change your style just to fit the new home. If the style of the new home is not exactly you, it doesn’t have to dictate how you decorate the place. Stay true to your personal design style. Make whatever changes you can to the place itself and then bring in your style via the furniture and accessories. Check out my tips for mixing decorating styles.
8 Don’t be afraid to break the rules. Remember, there are no rules in decorating! Combine as many styles, colors, and pieces you want. It’s your home. You decide what type of vibe you want to create.
Try some of these tips to give new life to your existing furniture and make your old furniture work in your new home. It’s all about opening your mind to new possibilities and seeing your furniture from a different perspective.
