When you hear the word “loft”, it commonly refers to an apartment with a large adaptable open space that is often a converted light industrial building or commercial space. However, there are lots of homes that have been built with an area that is referred to as a loft or it may be called a landing space. Typically, this loft space is situated at the top of the stairs with the upstairs rooms branching off of it or down adjoining hallways. Most loft spaces don’t have doors and they usually don’t have four walls. However, they do offer valuable square footage that when utilized properly can make a big difference for you. I know I’m always excited about extra square footage that I can use in a home.
The first step to making the most of this loft space is to decide how you want it to function. From there, you can start planning the room. I’ve put together several ways that you can use this awkward area that will have you wondering how you lived without it.
Ideas for a Loft Space
1 Create a cozy SITTING AREA. This will give you a place to get away from it all and chat quietly with friends.
3 A HOME OFFICE is an great way to utilize loft space, if your home is quiet and you don’t require a closed room. If you’re loft can be seen from the main areas, you’ll want to make sure your desk is organized and tidy when you’re done, and important papers are filed away. An easy way to keep things out of sight is to hide your desk area in a cabinet or armoire. That way you can close it up when you’re not working.
4 Turn your loft into a KID’S STUDY AREA. This may make them enjoy hitting the books more and you can keep an eye on them when they’re studying. Bring in a large table to use as a shared desk or create individual workspaces with smaller desks. You could even add a study bar along a wall with fun barstools.
5 If you’re looking for a spot to indulge your creativity, turn the loft into a CRAFT ROOM. Get creative with your storage by utilizing repurposed armoires or opt for built-in cabinets.
6 A GAME ROOM is a fun use for a loft space. You could set it up with a pool table or some other type of game table such as foosball or air hockey. We had a pool table in the loft in our last home and we loved it.
7 Create a TEEN LOUNGE where your kids can hang out with their friends. Outfit it with lots of comfortable seating and bring in a TV for video games and movies. A small snack station could be set up with a mini-fridge, microwave, and baskets of snacks.
8 Get in shape by bringing in some workout equipment and making your own HOME GYM. A loft space would also make a great YOGA or MEDITATION ROOM. If you love to dance, cover a wall in full length mirrors to create your own private DANCE STUDIO.
9 Give your kids their own special place by setting up a KID’S PLAYROOM and having plenty of storage space for their toys. This will help you from having toys scattered all over your house.
10 Think outside of the box and turn it into a LAUNDRY ROOM. This would most likely require additional plumbing and a vent for the dryer. But if you’re home has a small laundry room or lacks one altogether, this could be an option for you.
You can make the most of all the space in your home by first deciding what your needs are. Knowing what your needs are will help you establish how each room or space should function, including your loft space.
When you think about your loft, which one of these ideas fulfills your needs or inspires you the most?
