My home office is one of my favorite (and most important) rooms in my home. It’s where I do things I love like gather inspiration, put together decorating plans, and write blog posts. It’s also where I do chores like bills, filing, business management, etc. Depending on your personal interests and responsibilities, your home office is command central, the place where you get things done.
Keeping your home office organized makes anything you do in there so much easier. Not only do I feel a lot more inspired when my office is organized, but I can also get the stuff done I don’t enjoy doing (I’m looking at you, bills) a lot quicker, more efficiently, and with less headache. A clean office cultivates a clear mind.
Every January, I analyze my home office organization situation and make improvements. No matter how organized you are throughout the year, it’s good to take stock once a year to see what can go, what can stay, and what can be made better. One of the first places I tackle is the home office because, like we discussed, so many crucial aspects of my day happen in there.
Try these 12 home office organization tips and ideas to pave the way for a more inspiring and efficient work space in 2017:
12 HOME OFFICE ORGANIZATION TIPS
1 Give yourself a clear area to work. The space doesn’t need to be huge, it just needs to be large enough for you to work comfortably and have a place for what you need.
2 Besides the main work area, designate an area for office supplies, files, books, and reference materials.
4 Keep things where they’re convenient – especially things you use on a regular basis. An office space isn’t very efficient if you have to jump through hoops just to reach a file or throw something in the wastebasket.
5 Position equipment according to how often it’s used. If you use your printer everyday, put it where you’ll have easy access to it. Items you don’t use that often can be placed a little farther out of reach or stored in a cabinet.
6 Turn a regular dresser drawer into a slide-out printer drawer. When not in use, hide the printer away by closing the drawer. Check out this easy tutorial to create your own hide-away printer drawer.
7 Use decorative baskets or bins to keep office supplies organized and out of the way.
8 A leftover mint tin is the perfect size for organizing business cards.
9 A rolling cart makes a great portable office. You can store necessary items on the lower shelves and keep smaller things organized in pretty baskets and bins.
10 Keep electronics cords untangled. Feed them through a hole in the desktop, so you can plug them into a surge protector mounted to the underside of the desk. Keep the cords in a wire basket that’s suspended under the desk with wire hooks. Use tags to identify each wire.
11 Create a unified look in your office by using binders, boxes, files and accessories all in the same color, pattern or texture, or at least make sure they all compliment each other.
12 Make sure you have a place for everything in your office. And when you’re done using something, put it back where it belongs. This tip is so simple and makes such a huge difference, though it’s so easy to skip!
