Last weekend, I went shopping for a new comforter for my master bedroom. One of my pet peeves is having a comforter that doesn’t hang down far enough to completely cover the sides of the mattress when you make the bed. I was on the hunt for one that would be wide enough not to cause this issue. This got me to thinking about writing this blog post. Pretty much everyone knows that a king bed is bigger than a twin, but do you know the measurements of each? Knowing the sizes comes in handy when trying to decide whether a queen or king bed will fit into a room or what size mattress will fit that cool headboard you just scored at HomeGoods or your favorite place to shop. To help you out, I’ve put together a bedding size chart. Not only does it have standard mattress sizes, but I’ve also included general bedding sizes for sheets, pillows, comforters, bedspreads, and blankets. I’ve even listed typical decor pillow sizes for you, too.
BEDDING SIZE CHART
The sizes listed on the bedding size chart for mattresses are standard. However, there are no set sizes for sheets, comforters, bedspreads, blankets, decor pillows, and bed skirts. Actual sizes vary from one brand to another and one designer to another. It’s important to check the size of the item you are considering to ensure that it will fit your bed. For those items, I’ve listed the most common measurements and dimensions.
IMPORTANT TIP: To make sure your bedding is going to fit properly, be sure to measure the height of the mattress and include it in your total measurement. For example, this is how I determined the size comforter I needed. I have a king size bed (76 x 80 inches); it sits in a bed frame. From the top of the mattress to the point I wanted the comforter to touch the bed frame is 16 inches on each side. I added the width of the mattress to the height on both sides – 76+16+16=108. That meant my comforter needed to be at least 108 inches wide. I wasn’t worried about the length, because it was being tucked behind the bed frame.
I hope this chart helps you out. To make it easier for you, I’ve made a printable copy of the bedding size chart and added it to the library.
Please feel free to leave me a comment or ask a question. I love it when you do. It makes my day! To get the discussion started, I have a question for you: When it comes to bedding, which do you prefer – a comforter, quilt or bedspread?
Thanks Peggy, your size chart really is a big help
You’re very welcome, Lillian. I’m glad you found it helpful. 🙂
Thanks for this information. I am going through the same issue with a platform storage bed. Agghh! Because we are tall, we opted for a low profile box spring which adds to the problem.
Hi Lisa, You’re very welcome. Measuring before purchasing helps with everything, including bedding. I’m happy you found this information helpful.:)
