Let me begin this by stating that I really love Christmas (“C’mon and let it snow.” Sorry, couldn’t help myself. Love that movie.) …As I was saying, I love Christmas and everything that goes with it. However, when the season is over I am more than ready to put away the holiday decorations and get started with the new year. Like many people, I’m often inspired to make changes. One of the most fun places to begin is in my home. As I tell my clients, changes you make in your home will have an effect on you every day. And sometimes the smallest things you do to freshen your home can bring a huge reward.
If you have the urge to give your home a new look or just freshen things up a bit, I have some fun ideas for you. These aren’t major overhauls; they’re simple ideas that are easy to implement and can be done on any budget.
Ideas to Freshen Your Home
1 Rotate your art. You don’t have to hang all of your art on the wall. Try separating them into seasons – Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. Then every six months you can rotate them. This way you will look at them with a renewed spirit. If you don’t want to do it seasonally, switch them out in January and July. You can do it more often if you have lots of pieces and less wall space.
2 Change-up your accent pillows. You can change the whole look and feel of a room with the addition of accent pillows. It’s a quick and easy update. Rearrange the ones you have on your bed or sofa now, or switch them up with others in the house. You could also update the ones you have by tying a scarf around them or adding a decorative pin.
3 Restyle your coffee table. Trays are a great way to organize similar items or groupings of small items on a coffee table. Use stacks of books, candles, and other accessories to create a pleasing vignette. Swap things out from other rooms to invigorate the display.
4 Revamp your bookshelves. As with coffee tables, restyle your bookcases to change things up. Not all shelves need to have books on them. When adding books, be sure to leave space for decorative items.
5 Dress-up your dining table. This is one of my favorites! You can bring lots of color and style to your dining room by setting the table with beautiful dishes, linens, and a wonderful centerpiece. As much as I’d like to I can’t leave dishes out, because I have a cat that loves to walk all over everything when we’re not looking. That means the dishes only come out when we’re having dinner – then I can have some fun decorating. When we’re not using the table, I have a collection of runners that I use along with fresh flowers, candles, bowls, and a variety of other items I mix up depending on the season or holiday.
6 Bring in a new area rug. Area rugs are a fabulous way to instantly add color and texture to a room, and help define a space. Don’t be afraid to layer an area rug over carpeting or another rug. And if you’re a renter, it’s a great way to add color without painting or to cover up carpet that is not so appealing.
7 Update your linens. A new comforter and sheets can do wonders for a bedroom. Places like HomeGoods offer great deals on high-end bed linens for a fraction of the cost of most retailers and this simple upgrade will make a big difference on the space.
8 Declutter and organize your closet. Eliminating clutter and organizing your closet will help you save time when you’re getting ready to go to work or out to play. It’s a good idea to go through your closet every six months to clear out what you’re no longer wearing and make room for new purchases.
9 Liven up your walls with paint. If you want to freshen your home, there’s nothing better at transforming a room than paint. If you don’t want to paint the entire room, paint one wall in an accent color to give the room a new look.
10 Clean & touch-up your baseboards. I have a thing about baseboards. I like them to be crisp and clean, because freshly painted baseboards help make a house look polished. Be sure to clean them on a regular basis. You can touch them up whenever necessary or at least twice a year get the paint brush out and freshen them up. The same can be said for trimwork and doors.
It doesn’t take much to freshen your home and give it a new look With very little time and a bit of effort, you can create a lovely environment for you and your family. I hope these ideas help to get your new year off to an amazing start!
